I didn't go to graduate school to make money or further my career. Rather, it was a pivot from the familiar world of psychology and social work into an area that I was wholly unfamiliar with--the hard sciences--a field that I had taken great strides to avoid altogether.
Until I met Dina. She was a regular at my senior center, and she had ALS. Advanced as it was, she was limited to utterances only those familiar with her knew how to decipher. She would occasionally cry out in uncontrollable sobs, showing emotions on her face that her body could no longer hide. Those times pained me the most.
The second most painful aspect of our relationship was my complete inability to comprehend the scientific literature that I desperately searched via Google Scholar.
At the same time, my grandmother was dying of cancer. The same grandmother that I witnessed nurture her husband back from the brink of death after open heart surgery at 72. The woman who graduated with a chemistry degree in the 1960s, who would wink at me as she told status updates to the family about how well my grandpa was doing post-surgery. Later she would disclose that she was slowly and methodically weaning him off of each and every single medication he was prescribed--by doctors who were sure that only pharmaceuticals could ensure that he fully healed from such a traumatic medical event.
Instead, she who used diet, nutrition, and natural products to heal my grandfather. Now, she was being slowly eaten alive from the inside out. Quickly, it became two women in my life that I could not help nor understand fully what was even wrong with them.
Facing this loss sparked a determination in me to understand the complexities of these diseases, and I set out to do so.
